What is Dry AMD?

Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) is a common eye condition that primarily affects older adults, resulting in central vision loss. The macula, a central part of the retina, is responsible for straight-ahead vision and plays a crucial role in activities such as reading, driving and recognising faces.

AMD is a progressive retinal disease that irreversibly impairs vision by damaging the macula.

This is the leading cause of irreversible blindness in the developed world. Estimates suggest that nearly 50 million people worldwide are affected by AMD.

There Are Two Main Types of Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD).

Dry AMD

This is the most common form, accounting for around 80-90% of cases. It occurs as the macula thins over time due to the natural aging process. Small yellow deposits, called drusen, build up beneath the retina, putting increasing stress on it, especially if the drusen grow larger and more numerous. Over time, the retina above the drusen begins to degenerate, resulting in gradual vision loss.

Wet AMD

This less common form of AMD occurs when abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the retina and macula in response to the presence of drusen.

These vessels can leak blood and fluid, causing rapid damage to the macula and resulting in more rapid vision loss.

The Stages of AMD

What Happens if AMD is Left Untreated?

If untreated, intermediate AMD can develop into advanced forms:

Geographic Atrophy

(GA), which causes permanent damage to the macula;

A rarer but fast-progressing form leading to severe vision loss due to abnormal blood vessels growing behind the retina
